Why Celtic should hold onto Scott Brown amidst interest from abroad

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Celtic captain Scott Brown is being targeted by Australian A-League aspirants Western Melbourne. It is certain to be an ambitious bid from the team from Down Under. The report says that the A-league hopefuls are preparing to lure the Hoops captain away from the Parkhead Stadium and make him their marquee signing.

The 33-year-old midfielder joined the Scottish Champions in 2007 from Hibernian and has played over 300 games for the club. In the meantime, he has won nine Scottish Premiership titles with the team, aiming for the tenth this season.

Brown is out of contract at the end of this summer and is in talks with chief executive Peter Lawwell over an extension of the current deal. The report says that Celtic are aware of the interest from abroad but they are confident of the player signing an extension. They are weighing up an option to give him the coaching role as well, in the future.

Here’s why Celtic are right in trying to keep hold of their talismanic figure.

Celtic need their captain

Celtic have made a rather subdued start to the season which resulted in them getting eliminated from the Champions League qualifiers. However, in the past month or so, Brendan Rodgers’ men have started to string wins together, especially in the league. They are now third in the table after a slow start.

Scott Brown

Brown has played a vital role thus far, holding the midfield together and leading the team in the right direction. Having been at the club for more than a decade now, the 33-year-old is an important part of the team on and off the pitch. His experience would be invaluable in guiding the young players to perform better.

Hence, it is plausible to say that Celtic are doing the right thing by trying to keep hold of the player.

Giving him the new contract with the option of a coaching role in the coming years would be an ideal offer. The player would feel more valued when he knows that he is here not just for playing, but also to be a leader off the pitch and coach the academy in the future.
