Tottenham opinion: Spurs in for Steven Nzonzi – should Pochettino sign him?

Italian news outlet Calciomercato has reported that Tottenham among many other sides are interested in a move for AS Roma star Steven Nzonzi. The North London side are in the market for new players, as they look to challenge both Manchester City and Liverpool for the title.

Reports from the Daily Mail have already revealed that with a few changes, Tottenham should have around £150million to spend. However, Steven Nzonzi is not a player that the North London side should really look to spend money on.

The 30-year-old has had arguably his worst season along with the rest of the AS Roma squad, failing to live up to the potential he showed at Sevilla. It was there that Nzonzi really showcased the best of his abilities, playing a key role.

Making a move to Tottenham then made a lot of sense but now, it’s a move that will hurt both sides. Nzonzi, though a quality player, will only be a small upgrade over current Tottenham star Victor Wanyama.

The former Southampton midfield destroyer has done relatively well but has not managed to establish himself as a first-team star.

Moreover, for a club chasing a Premier League title, challenging both Manchester City and Liverpool, they cannot be spending on players like Steven Nzonzi.

With Tottenham losing Mousa Dembele, they need a midfield maestro. Steven Nzonzi is a reliable passer but the 30-year-old is not the most creative player on the field.

This season, the Frenchman has a passing accuracy of 88.5% but has only averaged 0.9 key passes per game. It shows the lack of purpose that Nzonzi has on the field, which is why he has only made 34 appearances for AS Roma this season.

This includes 26 in the Serie A and 8 in the Champions League, including a key role in Roma’s 3-1 second leg loss to FC Porto. That showcased the worst abilities that the Frenchman has at his disposal and further emphasises why a move shouldn’t be made.

Conclusion

Tottenham do not need another defensive midfielder in their ranks, as they already have both Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama to do what Steven Nzonzi does.

What the North London side really do need is a creative number 6, someone who can dictate the play and move the ball around with remarkable ease.
