Manchester City opinion: Guardiola wants Rodri Hernandez – good move?

According to a report from Marca, Manchester City are set to battle it out with Europe’s biggest names for the signature of Atletico Madrid’s Rodri Hernandez, who has a £60m release clause.

The Spaniard’s performances this season have caught the eyes of many and Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain along with Pep Guardiola’s side are plotting a summer move.

Hernandez only joined Atletico Madrid. The former Villareal man signed a five-year deal with Atletico Madrid but the 22-year-old is up for grabs in the summer.

Manchester City are in the hunt to replace their midfield powerhouse Fernandinho, who will turn 34 next month.

Having made the move from the Yellow Submarine at the start of the season, Rodri’s performances have been hugely impressive and has only missed 4 games in the league so far.

The Spaniard also played every game in Atletico’s Champions League campaign this season which came to a disappointing end against Juventus.

However, Rodri was one of the very few players who seemed to be interested in that brilliant game but Cristiano Ronaldo’s masterclass overshadowed his decent performance.

Rodri’s style of play is very similar to Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets. Like the veteran midfield maestro, Rodri is incredibly calm in possession and always manages to find time on the ball despite being pressed from all sides.

The 22-year-old still has a long way to go in his career to reach the level of the Barca man but he is on the right track and under Per Guardiola, he will have a massive chance to fulfil his potential.

Busquets was a revelation under Pep Guardiola and made his name as one the best defensive midfielders in the world.

Rodri should look to emulate his compatriot’s emergence over the years. Guardiola is renowned for turning young, talented players into world beaters over the years and Rodri would benefit a lot by working under Pep Guardiola.

The Spaniard averages 3.4 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 2.2 clearances and has successfully won 2.4 aerial duels per game so far this season. Rodri is also an astute passer and averages 56 passes per game of which 3.6 are long balls, with an astounding passing accuracy of over 90%. (WhoScored)

Conclusion

Rodri Hernandez would be an outstanding fit at Manchester City and Pep Guardiola should not think twice about making a move for the Spaniard.

Still only 22, the midfielder has a long way to go in his career and has the ability to be a mainstay in the City midfield for the best part of the next decade.
