According to a report from BBC, Watford had rejected Everton’s £30m bid for Abdoulaye Doucoure during the summer transfer window.
Abdoulaye Doucoure, 26, has been a long-term target for the Toffees. Indeed, Marco Silva worked with the French star during his time at Vicarage Road as manager, and wanted to bring the powerful midfielder to Merseyside. However, the transfer never materialised and he has since stayed put at Watford.
Watford have endured a very poor start to the new Premier League campaign, picking up just one point so far this season.
While the international break was on, the Hornets decided the time is right to sack manager Javi Gracia and replace him with Quique Sanchez Flores for a second spell at Vicarage Road.
Javi Gracia was hellbent to keep hold of Doucoure in the summer and following his sack, the French midfielder could be tempted into considering his future and exiting Vicarage Road in 2020. Everton may believe this is a fantastic chance to strike and get their summer target.
The Toffees made some exciting signings over the summer, with the likes of Moise Kean, Andre Gomes, Fabian Delph, Alex Iwobi, Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Jonas Lossl arriving at Goodison Park.
Following the exits of Idrissa Gueye and James McCarthy, Silva wanted to bring in another central midfielder despite adding Delph and Gbamin to the ranks.
With Chelsea under a transfer embargo, Manchester United under rebuild, Tottenham struggling and Arsenal’s transfer strategy blemished, Silva may see this as a great chance to get into the top four this season. Thus, he must look to further bolster his midfield options by signing Doucoure in January.
Doucoure may have not enjoyed an ideal start to the new Premier League campaign, we all know the Watford midfield ace’s qualities. The 26-year-old is a central midfielder that can play a box-to-box role or as a destroyer, and is a real athlete with immense stamina, tackling and interception skills.
He was directly involved in 11 goals in 40 games for Watford last season across all competitions and can be an unstoppable force in the midfield on his day.

The former Stade Rennes man can drive with the ball and make a killer pass in the final third. Doucoure has performed extremely well at Watford and is all ready to make the step up to a bigger club in the Premier League.
Silva should give the Frenchman a platform to showcase his talent and he will definitely inject some extra quality in the central midfield area.
With an exciting squad and a manager under whom he has worked, Doucoure could be tempted to swap Watford for Everton in January.
