Why Jayden Bogle would be a good fit for Bruce’s wing-back system at Newcastle

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle United have been credited with an interest in Derby County right-back Jayden Bogle, with the report suggesting that the Magpies are still keen to strengthen their full-back options in January.

The Magpies splashed the cash to bring in Swedish international Emil Krafth from Ligue 1 outfit Amiens to provide cover and competition for DeAndre Yedlin and Javier Manquillo down the right, while Jetro Willems also arrived on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt bolster the options on the left-hand side of the backline.

However, as the story goes, the Toon Army might once again choose to dip into the market during the mid-season trading period to add a bit to their existing options and Bogle has been identified as someone who fits the bill perfectly.

Newcastle, though, are not the only Premier League club who are keeping tabs on the 19-year-old, with the same report claiming that the likes of Everton, Brighton and Crystal Palace are also keen on bringing the youngster to the top-flight. (h/t Chronicle Live)

Bogle broke into the first-team picture at Pride Park under the stewardship of Frank Lampard last season and took the Championship by storm with a string of impressive performances over the entirety of the 2018-19 campaign, playing a key role to propel the Rams to the finals of the playoffs.

The Reading-born academy graduate racked up a tally of 2 goals and 9 assists in 43 league appearances for Derby County the last term and carried his rich vein of form into the ongoing campaign as well, although he is currently on the sidelines after suffering an injury against Swansea City in what was only his second game in the Championship this season.

Bogle, though, has done enough to put himself on the radar of several Premier League clubs and the Derby prodigy might get a chance to prove his credentials in the top-flight in January.

To put things into perspective, Newcastle United could do themselves a world of good by offering Jayden Bogle a route to the Premier League, given that the Magpies currently lack quality in the right-back department, despite bringing in Krafth earlier in the summer to compete with Manquillo and Yedlin.

The move to bring in Krafth has already shown strong signs of backfiring, with the 25-year-old failing to impress in a wing-back role in Steve Bruce’s back-three system thus far in the Premier League.

The Swede, with his lack of pace and mediocre attacking attributes, doesn’t seem to be the right kind of personnel for a wing-back role, while Manquillo, who is out of contract next summer, has always been a bit-part player in Newcastle’s setup.

Yedlin, on the other hand, is really exciting further up the pitch but the United States international isn’t the best defender after all.

A young and talented player with a lot of potential and, possibly, a high resale value in the future, Bogle fits the profile of professionals that owner Mike Ashley likes to target in the transfer window.

Besides that, the jet-heeled 19-year-old has the perfect blend of offensive and defensive attributes in his game, which should make him a better fit for a wing-back role in Bruce’s system.

One might argue that he is still very young and might struggle to make the step up to the Premier League, but given his potential and whatever we have seen of him in the Championship, it shouldn’t be a big deal for him to acclimatise to the more competitive atmosphere in the top-flight eventually.

With that in mind, Newcastle should have him high on the wishlist when the transfer window reopens in January in a bid to fix their right-back conundrum for the longer term.
