Why Liverpool should make a move for Ryan Bertrand in January

Liverpool have made the perfect start to the 2019-20 season. Jurgen Klopp will be aiming to extend the Reds’ 100 per cent winning record in the Premier League and he certainly has the squad to do so.

After winning the Champions League last season and coming extremely close to breaking their Premier League title drought, Klopp was expected to spend big in the summer transfer window.

Surprisingly, Liverpool had a very quiet transfer window with goalkeeper Adrian the most significant name arriving in Merseyside.

As far as the departures are concerned, the Reds sold Danny Ings, Simon Mignolet and Ryan Kent, whilst releasing Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno. Moreno joined Villarreal on a free transfer after spending five years at Anfield.

The Spaniard didn’t manage any meaningful first-team football in the last couple of seasons as his place was taken by Andrew Robertson.

Robertson, who had a stellar 2018-19 season, was part of the PFA Team of the Year and the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season. He is undoubtedly the best left-back in the Premier League, with his position in the Liverpool starting XI absolutely unassailable.

However, just like any other top football club that challenges in various tournaments, Liverpool too, need a back-up for Robertson.

He may play almost all matches, therefore, the Merseyside outfit needs to secure the services of a player who is happy to play second fiddle to the Scotland skipper.

With that in mind, Liverpool would do a smart job by making a move for Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand.

Interestingly, the Reds were keen on securing the services of the defender five years ago when he was plying his trade for Chelsea. However, he left for Southampton on loan before sealing a permanent switch.

Ryan Bertrand, 30, has been one of Southampton’s consistent performers for the last few seasons. He managed only 24 Premier League appearances last term due to injury problems but in 2017/18, the left-back had missed just three league games.

At 30, the former England international could be tempted to move to a club hungry for winning trophies and silverware.

At Liverpool, Bertrand could certainly add a lot to his CV. He is an aggressive left-back with the sheer willingness to move forward and contribute to the team’s attacks.

He has the energy to go up and down the left flank, and also exchange short passes before moving ahead with the ball.

The former Chelsea man is also solid defensively, and despite turning 30, he has the pace to make recovery runs and retain possession.

Verdict

All in all, Bertrand would represent a smart addition to the Liverpool backline, whilst being an able back-up to Robertson.
