Aston Villa were one of the busiest sides across Europe during the summer transfer window. Yet, they have struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League so far this season and several of their players’ performances have contributed to that.
The Villans are outside the relegation zone after five matches purely on goal difference alone with just one win under their banner. Dean Smith’s side may be defensively one of the top sides in the top-flight having two clean-sheets, but they have struggled at the other end of the pitch.
Record signing Wesley Moraes has scored only one goal since moving from Club Brugge in the summer, while Jonathan Kodjia is currently out injured. It has left Smith with no goalscoring options beyond Wesley and Kodjia and that could come back to haunt his club if things don’t change quickly.
That being said, Aston Villa should prioritise signing a new striker in the January transfer window and they must go all out to sign Genk striker Mbwana Samatta, who was heavily linked with a switch to Villa Park over the summer.
Mbwana Samatta, 26, enjoyed a fantastic last season with Genk, bagging 32 goals in 51 games across all competitions. He has hit the ground running in 2019/20 as well, netting six goals in seven goals including one in the Champions League for the Belgian side.
The Tanzanian international is a clinical finisher in front of goal when presented with an opportunity. Standing at 5ft 11in tall, he isn’t the tallest of strikers in Europe but can be a real menace for the defenders in the box due to his intelligent movement and poaching instincts.
Samatta plays on the shoulder and leaves defenders to dead with his burst of acceleration and agility.
At Aston Villa, Samatta can be deployed in a number nine role or alongside Wesley in a 4-4-2. His addition to the club will offer tactical versatility for Dean Smith in the final third, whilst improving the quality of Villa’s attack.
If the Tanzanian international keeps scoring for Genk– and there’s no indication of him slowing down – then the Belgian outfit will surely keep that price tag moving forward.
So, Villa will have to be ready to pay a premium if they wish to bag Samatta’s signature in January.
