Huddersfield Town would miss a trick if they do not offer a new deal to this veteran PL-winning defender

Why Danny Simpson could be a useful signing for Huddersfield Town

According to Examiner Live, Huddersfield Town are exploring the possibility of offering Danny Simpson a professional deal in a bid to sort out their defensive problems.

The 32-year-old has been handed a trial by the Terriers and new manager Danny Cowley will run the rule over the veteran before a final assessment is made.

Simpson, who is currently a free agent following his release from Leicester City at the end of the previous campaign, also had a trial at West Brom earlier the summer, although he wasn’t deemed worthy of a deal by the Baggies. (h/t Examiner Live)

However, Huddersfield are apparently keen to offer the former Man United youth product a new lease of life to stay in the Championship and given that he has been a free agent since the end of last season, the Terriers should have no problem registering him outside of the transfer window.

The Terriers, meanwhile, have endured a nightmarish start to their Championship campaign this term and all hopes that they might have had of making a push for promotion back to the top-flight at the first time of asking are probably dead and buried by now.

Currently languishing second-bottom in the standings just above Stoke City on goal difference, the Terriers are yet to register their first victory in the Championship this term, having lost six out of their first seven league games.

In response to the club’s terrible start to the campaign, the hierarchy pulled the trigger on Jan Siewert and appointed Danny Cowley, who left the job at Lincoln City to take up the vacant role at the John Smith’s Stadium during the most recent international break.

The managerial change hasn’t paid immediate dividends, though, with Huddersfield Town suffering a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday in Cowley’s first game in charge.

Realistically, with the Terriers at the bottom of the table and four points adrift of safety after such a poor start, Cowley could have his work cut out in steering the club clear of the relegation zone if things do not improve soon.

Of course, they can choose to bring in reinforcements in January but it won’t be a bad idea for the Terriers to make some shrewd moves and snap up some free-agents to plug the holes in their ranks. And Danny Simpson is one of the high-profile free agents in the pool, who is yet to be registered by any club.

To put things into perspective, Huddersfield Town signing Danny Simpson could go a long way in turning their fortunes around in the Championship this season. The Terriers have already shipped 13 goals in 7 league games thus far and they just cannot afford to keep conceding goals for fun if they are to get back to winning ways.

Huddersfield Town had the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League last season and things haven’t really changed much for them after relegation from the top-flight, with the backline creaking far too often for their liking in the Championship as well.

The Terriers lost defenders Tommy Smith and Zanka in the summer transfer window and, though they brought in Tommy Elphick to shore up the backline, the need for more depth at the back has been quite apparent from the club’s defensive woes.

A former Premier League winner with Leicester City, Danny Simpson has also featured for the likes of Newcastle United, QPR and Sunderland in the past, winning promotion from the Championship to the Premier League with all three of those clubs.

At 32, he might not be the same player that he was in his youthful days but Simpson could be a valuable addition to Huddersfield’s ranks with his bagful of experience and winning mentality and his arrival could instil a fighting spirit within the team, something that the Terriers have lacked this term.

With that in mind, it should be a no-brainer for Huddersfield Town to offer Simpson a deal, provided he manages to prove his fitness on the training ground.
