The Premier League is possibly the most competitive top division in world football.

Although Manchester City are currently dominating the league, there have been several success stories over the past decades.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea have won multiple Premier League titles while Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City have also picked up titles during this era.

The old First Division was also won by several clubs while the second division (Championship) is an extremely competitive league.

The second tier of English football also features some of the biggest clubs in the world and gaining promotion to the Premier League is worth millions.

It isn’t easy to make the jump from the Championship to the Premier League and clubs often spend big to land quality players.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are a great example. They signed quality European players during their time in the Championship and now, they are one of the best performers in the top division.

Kevin De Bruyne is one of the best in the Premier League

The Premier League is also home to some of the best players in the world. Mohamed Salah, David de Gea, Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero are some of the top stars and they earn millions to perform on a weekly basis.

Sponsorship money is also huge for each club but they do have to spend big to keep the biggest stars. However, the Premier League is also one of the best paying leagues in the world of football.

Paul Pogba is one of the best in the Premier League

A BBC report from 2017 claimed that the average Premier League salary for a player was £2,642,508 – or £50,817-per-week.

Of course, bigger clubs such as Manchester City and Manchester United were offering double the weekly wage to their players at that time (h/t BBC).

The Premier League also gave footballers a better average salary when compared to Ligue 1, La Liga and the Bundesliga (h/t BBC).

Championship clubs also make a big splash

The second tier of English football still allows for a decent earning to their stars.

Another report from Devon Live claims that the average Championship salary was £10,998-per-week.

Jack Grealish helped Aston Villa gain promotion to the Premier League

This was 1/5th the average Premier League salary but is almost five times better than the average League One salary.

The average Championship salary was still a decent wage and of course, the top players in the division also have endorsement deals.

Other clubs leading the race

The Premier League might pay their stars the most on an average, however, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain had the highest wage bills in football in 2017.

Lionel Messi is one of the greatest to have played the game

Lionel Messi made a staggering £500,000-per-week in that year while Neymar’s move to PSG pushed up their wage bill too.

The weekly wage bill for Barcelona was £6.6m while Manchester United’s bill came out to £5.241m while Manchester City came behind the Red Devils at £5.241m.

The Premier League has always been an attractive competition for top players and the wages certainly prove that.
