Wolves sealing £10m deal for Championship star could make them more dangerous in the final third

Why Karlan Grant could be a real coup for Wolves in January

According to Sun (h/t Birmingham Mail), Wolves have been credited with an interest in Huddersfield Town striker Karlan Grant, who has been in fine form for the Terriers in the Championship this season.

The 22-year-old has been one of the shining lights in what has otherwise been a disappointing start to the season for Huddersfield, steering Danny Cowley’s side clear of the relegation zone with his heroics in front of goal.

Grant, who completed a £2million move to the John Smith’s Stadium from Charlton Atheltic in January 2019, couldn’t save the Terriers from Premier League relegation but he has really made his presence felt in the Championship this term, amidst all the attacking woes.

With a tally of 9 goals and 2 assists in 15 league appearances for the Terriers this season, the Greenwich-born forward has been instrumental in the club’s massive turnaround of fortunes under Cowley over the past month and a half.

Grant was on target yet again in the Championship, as Huddersfield beat Brentford 1-0 to climb up to 18th in the standings. They stretched their unbeaten run to seven games, a marked improvement considering the fact that they had gone winless in their first nine league outings.

While the likes of Adama Diakhaby, Steve Mounie, Fraizer Campbell, Isaac Mbenza and Elias Kachunga have all struggled to make much of an impact in terms of goal contributions, Grant has caught the eye with his consistent run of form up top, and that has apparently attracted interest from the top-flight clubs heading into the January window.

The former England U-19 international has been a real threat in the Championship with his pace, ability to run behind defences and clinical finishing.

As per report, the 22-year-old is expected to cost around £10million during the mid-season trading period should Wolves come calling for his services.

To put things into perspective, Karlan Grant could be a real coup for a Wolves side that has struggled to find the net regularly in the Premier League this season.

Raul Jimenez and Adama Traore are the only players to have netted more than once in the league campaign so far and Nuno Santo has every reason to look for attacking reinforcements in January.

Even though Wolves are in a strong position to make it through to the knockout rounds of the Europa League after three rounds, they have found it tough to deal with the pressure of playing in Europe with their relatively small tight-knit squad.

That has had a negative impact on their Premier League campaign, with the Black Country outfit only managing 2 victories from their first 11 fixtures.

Furthermore, mediocre returns of 14 goals in 11 games clearly epitomise the need to add more firepower to the ranks and Grant could be the man to add a bit more clinical edge to their attack.

Verdict

A summer recruit from AC Milan, Partick Cutrone, has only netted twice in all competitions so far while Diogo Jota, who was instrumental in Wolves’ heroics last season, has largely blown hot and cold.

Grant is still 22 and has a lot of room for improvement in the years to come, meaning that he could be a smart acquisition at a reasonable price.

Plus, it is worth mentioning that he made a positive impact in the Premier League during the latter half of Huddersfield’s campaign last time around, scoring 4 goals in 13 appearances. Nuno Santo might fancy transforming him into a quality top-flight striker in the years to come.

All in all, Wolves going all out for Karlan Grant in January would make perfect sense, both in terms of the fee involved, as well as the club’s immediate and long-term goals moving forward.
