Tottenham vs Manchester City report: Tottenham match report

Tottenham and Manchester City played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, as late VAR drama stole the show with Gabriel Jesus’ strike ruled out deep into second-half stoppage time.

Manchester City had taken the lead through Raheem Sterling after Kevin De Bruyne’s exquisite first-time cross met the Englishman. But Erik Lamela levelled the score after 23 minutes, curling in from 20 yards out.

Pep Guardiola’s side were relentless in their stride though, and De Bruyne’s magic saw the hosts retake the lead when he supplied another sublime cross, with Sergio Aguero benefitting this time. The Belgian midfielder nearly teed up Ilkay Gundogan for a third goal shortly before half-time, but the German placed his shot wide.

Hugo Lloris reacted sharply to keep out Oleksandr Zinchenko’s deflected strike after the restart, before Aguero and Bernardo Silva missed good chances.

A quick passing move led to another shooting opportunity for De Bruyne, but his shot was not as accurate as his passing. And City’s inefficiency in front of goal came back to haunt them.

Substitute Lucas Moura scored with his first touch of the ball in the 56th minute, heading home a Lamela cross. Lloris nearly gifted the hosts another lead with a poor punch to clear a cross, but no one could steer the ball home before he corrected his mistake and gathered the ball.

Jesus replaced Aguero and made an immediate impact with two dangerous efforts on goal. And the Brazilian curled home what appeared to be the winner in injury time, but VAR showed Aymeric Laporte handled the ball in the buildup, this ruling out the goal.
