Steven Gerrard’s Rangers continued their strong early season form with a 3-1 win against Kilmarnock in the Scottish League Cup, with striker Alfredo Morelos scoring a superb hat-trick to send the team through. The Gers looked confident in possession, were once again impressive going forward.
The former Liverpool captain will be happy with the team’s performance after the Gers made their way past Maribor in the Europa League playoff round. Kilmarnock made a bright start to the game but Rangers held their own and made their chances count in the final third.
The English goalkeeper was unfortunate to concede a goal after making a number of vital saves in the first half. But it was a splendid performance by the Gers goalkeeper.
The right-back was marauding down the flank and whipped in a number of sublime balls into the box. His crosses proved to be a massive threat to Kilmarnock.
The defender put in an excellent shift at the back, making a number of crucial tackles in the final third. He also required treatment after a dangerous collision with Foderingham.
Katic showcased fine leadership qualities at the back, with the defender winning a number of crosses that came into the box.
Barisic looked quite shaky right from the start and ended up scoring at the wrong end of the field. He didn’t look confident at all.
Ejaria’s distribution proved fruitful in the middle of the park but the Liverpool youth product was often dispossessed.
Arfield’s long-range efforts massively threatened the Kilmarnock goal but the midfielder was unable to get on the scoresheet.
Halliday brought a sense of stability and security in the middle of the park. His passing was slightly off the radar though.
Kent didn’t look confident and was unable to play his natural game. His set-pieces weren’t the best either.
A brilliant hat-trick from the in-form striker ensured the Rangers went into the next round of the competition. He was a constant menace in the box and could have scored one or two more.
Murphy had to be taken off after a nasty tackle with Kirk Broadfoot. The attacker didn’t enjoy the best of games as well.
Candeias looked sloppy on the ball after coming on and picked up a yellow card. But he did whip in a couple of teasing balls into the box.
Sadiq was presented with a couple of opportunities in the dying minutes but the striker was unable to convert.
McCrorie was brought in to see out the game and provide support as an additional defender at the back.
