Burnley opinion: Should the Clarets sign Jay Rodriguez?

According to a report from Calciomercato, West Brom have rejected a £12million bid for Jay Rodriguez from Burnley. The striker was heavily linked with a move to the Clarets in the summer but a deal failed to materialise.

However, Burnley are back in the hunt for the 29-year-old who has been in fine form for the Baggies in the Championship this season.

A lot was expected of Burnley this season after a phenomenal campaign last term when they finished 7th in the Premier League. However, Sean Dyche’s side have been incredibly poor this season and are in a fight with Southampton and Cardiff to stay in the Premier League.

One of Burnley’s biggest problems this season has been their over-reliance on Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood to score goals. The duo has scored 40% of the Clarets’ goals this season and Burnley need their other players to step up.

Burnley’s interest in Jay Rodriguez makes sense, thanks to the 29-year-old’s versatility of playing anywhere across the front-line. Rodriguez has played on both wings, as a second striker and also as a lone forward for West Brom so far this season and this trait will be of massive value to the Clarets.

Rodriguez has been incredible for the Baggies so far this season, having scored 19 goals and provided 5 assists in the Championship so far.

The 29-year-old’s partnership with Dwight Gayle has been a dream for the baggies and the duo has directly been involved in 48 goals for West Brom and have been one of the biggest reasons why they are fourth in the table.

Rodriguez could form a similar partnership with Ashley Barnes and the duo can light up Turf Moor next season. Rodriguez’s control and awareness of the teammates around him is brilliant and he could turn provider to most of Barnes’ goals next season.

Rodriguez averages 2.4 shots per game so far this season and has also won 1.8 aerial duels per 90 minutes.

Conclusion

Signing Jay Rodriguez would be an exceptional move by the Clarets and he would bolster their attack massively. His signing would allow the Burnley boss to have a far more attacking line-up than they’ve had this season.
