Crystal Palace opinion: Should the Eagles sign Jack Butland?

According to Sun journalist Alan Nixon, Crystal Palace will look to sign Stoke City’s Jack Butland in the summer if one of their current goalkeepers leaves at the end of the season. Butland’s Stoke City have had a horrible campaign in the Championship as they currently sit in 15th place.

Butland’s quality as a goalkeeper is worthy of a move to a Premier League club and the England international should leave the club in the summer if he has the chance to.

Crystal Palace have had their issues in goal despite signing Vincente Guaita in the summer. The Spaniard played second fiddle to Wayne Hennessey for the first 16 games of the Premier League before a back-strain to the Welshman gave him the opportunity to make his first start for the club.

Guaita has been impressive for the Eagles since making his debut in the Premier League, having kept 7 clean sheets in 15 games so far. The Spaniard looks to have taken over the role of the club’s first-choice but at 32 years of age, he isn’t really the long-term solution.

Palace’s third-choice keeper Julian Speroni will turn 40 next month and the Argentine is expected to leave at the end of the campaign when his contract expires. Palace should address the issue of their ageing goalkeepers by making a move for Jack Butland in the summer.

Still only 26 years old, Butland is hugely experienced, having played over 240 senior games for club and country. The Englishman has kept 16 clean sheets for the Potters so far this season and has at times single-handedly saved them games.

Standing at 6ft 4in tall, Butland is a massive presence in the box and thanks to his reach, he is a fantastic guard for a side during set-pieces. Despite his height, the Stoke City star is incredibly agile and has the ability to get off his line quickly to avoid any danger.

Butland’s shot-stopping is one of the best that England have and the 26-year old, despite playing for a bottom-half club in the Championship, was called up to the England squad for the recent international break.

Conclusion

Crystal Palace signing Jack Butland would be an outstanding move in the summer and the Englishman could well win a number of games on his own for the club. Butland’s signing would also provide the Eagles with longevity and he can be their man between the sticks for the best part of the next decade.
