The Foxes cruised into the next round of the EFL Cup, after an impressive showing at Bramall Lane. An Islam Slimani double, plus strikes from Demarai Gray and Ahmed Musa, secured a comfortable victory.
The game took a while to get going, but saw 5 goals in the second half. Gray, who was very impressive on the night, opened the scoring in the 52nd minute. The youngster scored a fine solo goal. Algerian international Slimani, doubled the lead shortly after. The forward bundled in a cross from Gray.
The game was slipping away from Sheffield United rapidly. Slimani added his second of the game just four minutes later, to all but secure Leicester’s spot in the third round of the competition. The hosts managed to pull a goal back, through Coalan Lavery’s fortuitous effort in the 83rd minute. Lavery appeared to skew a cross past Leicester goalkeeper Ben Hamer. It was a bizarre goal, but the Blades were happy to take it.
However, no unlikely comeback materialised. Musa rounded off a good night for Leicester, with a 93rd minute strike. The Nigerian powered through the Sheffield United defence, before firing home his side’s fourth of the evening.
Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare will be delighted with his team’s performance last night. He played a much-changed starting 11, featuring only a handful of Premier League starters.
Long gone are the heady days of Premier League glory and the Champions League for the East Midlands club. They have started the campaign strongly, and the cups could provide them with a realistic source of silverware.
Meanwhile, Sheffield United are enjoying a return to the Championship this season. They have greater priorities and will now switch their attention back to the league.
