What A Snip! – Why Andrew Robertson Is Such A Bargain at £8m

Liverpool have started off the season on a rather moderate note. Starting with a 3-3 draw at Watford, they followed it up with a win against Crystal Palace at home. It was a rather cagey affair, but a 1-0 win did the job for The Reds. One bright point for the Reds was the performance of debutant Andrew Robertson, who put in a great shift at left-back. The Scotsman was a threat throughout the game, especially in the first half where his crosses were impeccable.

Given Liverpool’s left back situation last term when James Milner was fielded in the place of the often erring Alberto Moreno, Robertson’s £8million arrival from Hull City is a godsend to Jurgen Klopp’s side. Robertson impressed in a Hull side that couldn’t avoid relegation to The Championship. He was a constant attacking source for The Tigers from the left-hand side where his deliveries caused a constant threat in the opposition’s box.

There were quite a few failures at left back, namely Jose Enrique, Aly Cissokho, Paul Konchesky and Andrea Dossena. All these players failed miserably to hold down a spot and were eventually loaned out or sold permanently to other clubs. James Milner filled in last term and did what he could, as he scored quite a few goals although most of them were from the penalty spot.

Klopp decided that enough was enough and a specialist left-back was needed and he sought the KC Stadium to bring in Robertson and that too on the cheap. He looks like a very promising buy and could impress in the games to come.

His rise to the top was an unconventional one though, as barely 4 years back, he was playing for a Scottish 4^th division side named Queens Park. Dundee United picked him up from there after which Hull snapped him up.

He impressed for them in the Championship before helping them to promotion, where Hull failed in their bid to survive. But one positive that could be taken out of their campaign was the performances of a few players such as Robertson himself and Mbokani, Abel Hernandez and a few others. Now at Anfield, Robertson should look to put his foot on the gas and step it up a notch in a Liverpool side filled with flair players that can take the team forward in an attacking sense.

With Champions League or Europa League football to come as well, Robertson will be given plenty of chances while Klopp looks to put squad rotation to good use with Moreno and Milner filling in the gap at left back as well. Still only 23, Robertson has a bright future ahead of him and should look to impress the most in his peak years at the club. His performance against Crystal Palace was very promising and definitely holds good for his future at the club. Whether he lives up to his potential is down to his own performances as well as Klopp’s usage of the young lad.
