Match Report: Crystal Palace 2-1 Ipswich Town

Crystal Palace registered their first win under the new manager Frank de Boer, when they defeated lower league opponents Ipswich Town 2-1 in the second round of the EFL Cup.

Frank De Boer made seven changes to the side that took the field against Liverpool, handing starts to veteran goalkeeper Julian Speroni and midfielder Yohan Cabaye. Martin Kelly came in for James Tomkins, while Luka Milivojevic made way for James McArthur. Jeffrey Schlupp got a rare start at right wing-back, while youngsters Sullay Kaikai and Jason Lokilo started in attack.

On paper, it was supposed to be a cruise for the Eagles, against a young side named by Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy. But it wasn’t as easy as one would’ve thought it would be, as the visitors held their own against Palace. The only chance that De Boer’s men could create in the first-half was a free-kick from James McArthur, that was saved by the opposition goalkeeper.

While Ipswich offered little in terms of attacking threat, they were solid and resolute at the back, frustrating the home team. Youngster Kaikai had an effort saved by Dean Garken after the restart, as chances continued to come at a premium for the Eagles. De Boer introduced Andros Townsend around the hour mark hoping that the former Tottenham man would inject some life into the proceedings for his team. But it was Ipswich’s young loanee from Manchester City, Bersant Celina, who started to pose a threat to the Palace defence.

However, the first goal finally did come for Palace, through McArthur’s splendid left-footed curling effort in the 76th minute. Academy man Lokilo then came close twice – once denied by Gerken, once by the post. But McArthur made sure there were no late blips, as he grabbed his second goal of the night, with another fine effort with his right-foot this time. Celina did score a late consolation goal for Ipswich.

Palace bossed the possession, as expected, with 66% of the ball and had a total of 18 shots, 8 of which were on target. De Boer and the team will be relieved after getting off the mark for the season, following their defeats to Huddersfield Town and Liverpool in the Premier League. They will play Swansea City in their upcoming league encounter and will be hoping to carry on the momentum from the cup victory.

Here are some of the reactions from the Palace fans on social media, following their first win of the season:
