Tottenham vs Crystal Palace Report: Tottenham Match Report

Tottenham got off to a winning start in the first game at the new White Hart Lane as they beat Crystal Palace 2-0. Goals from Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen sealed the vital three points on a historic day for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Tottenham started off the game strong and pressed hard every time Palace got hold of the ball. However, the first chance of the game fell to the visitors as Jeffrey Schlupp blasted the ball over the bar from inside the box.

Besides the early scare, Spurs controlled the game and maintained most of the possession without much difficulty. Palace, as they have all season, looked to play on the counter-attack but failed to grab hold of the ball.

Tottenham’s first chance in their new home fell to Christian Eriksen whose shot from the edge of the box was a weak one and rolled out wide. Spurs continued to pile the pressure as Eriksen again forced Guaita to a save.

The Dane was allowed a lot of time and space on the ball and he dictated the play throughout the first half. Eriksen again had a pop at goal but this time, from over 30 yards out which sailed over the bar.

Harry Kane finally got his first chance in the 34th minute but his header was comfortably saved by Guaita. Tottenham appealed for a penalty following the chance when Wilfried Zaha’s attempted tackle on Davies looked late but the referee decided otherwise.

Danny Rose had a golden chance to become the first scorer at the new ground but the full-back decided to pass instead of shoot and wasted the chance. The first half at the new White Hart Lane finished goalless, with the hosts clearly the better the side.

In the second half, Spurs continued their domination on the ball as Kieran Trippier attempted an audacious volley from over 30 yards out which saw the ball fly way over the goal.

Michy Batshuayi bullied Alderweireld off the ball before cutting inside and trying a curler which went wide. The Belgian’s effort was the closest Palace got at that time before Son Heung-min’s left-footed strike from outside the box opened the scoring for the hosts in the 55th minute.

The goal boosted Spurs’ confidence more than it already was as Harry Kane was the next to have a chance but his strike from 15 yards out went wide of Guaita’s goal.

Palace failed to create any meaningful chance in the second half with Spurs clearly the superior side on the pitch. Christian Eriksen took the game away from Palace’s reach as he buried the ball into the back of the net from close range to double the hosts’ lead.

Tottenham managed to handle a late flurry of attacks from Palace to start off their era in their new ground with a deserved victory. The win takes Spurs back to 3rd place above Arsenal, who play their game on Sunday against Everton.
