Derby signing Wayne Rooney is a welcome move towards PL promotion

According to a report in the BBC, Manchester United and England legend, Wayne Rooney is set to move from D.C United in Major League Soccer and join Championship side Derby County in January.

Rooney is now 33 and is one of the greatest players in Premier League history.

He started his career at Everton at the age of 16 and made a big-money move to Manchester United in the 2004/05 season after a fantastic European Championship in the summer of 2004.

He’s the record goalscorer for Manchester United and the England national team, which suggests just what his legacy is.

After leaving United after the 2016/17 season, he moved back to his boyhood club Everton, where he was their top scorer but left after one season. Rooney has had a fantastic time in the United States but the lack of quality and competitive spirit is often a flaw in Major League Soccer.

Rooney would be a fantastic purchase for Derby, who had another England and Premier League legend in Frank Lampard as their manager last season. They now have Dutch legend Philip Cocu as manager and started their Championship campaign in fine fashion.

Rooney is a versatile player, who can play as centre-forward, an attacking midfielder or a central midfielder. His work rate is never in doubt and is still very capable of spectacular efforts.

He’ll also be a senior figure who is capable of inspiring the Derby side, as there’s so much he could give to the other players. He has been one of the major figures in the world of football in the last 20 years and it’ll be quite a phenomenal move for all parties involved.

Derby will also be able to finally maybe make that step up to the Premier League after coming so close in the last two seasons. Last season, they fell in the final hurdle to Aston Villa after a remarkable comeback against Leeds United.
