Monaco’s Han-Noah Massengo could be an incredible coup for Bristol City

According to BBC, Bristol City have signed highly-rated 18-year-old midfielder Han-Noah Massengo. 

Bristol Post claims that Massengo himself requested a transfer away from the Ligue 1 outfit in order to enjoy more regular minutes, having only broken into the first-team picture at Monaco in the previous campaign. 

The 18-year-old made only 7 appearances in all competitions under Thierry Henry and Leonardo Jardim, also featuring in the club’s UEFA Champions League campaign.

Talking about records, Massengo became the first player born in the 21st century to feature in Europe’s elite club tournament.  

Born in Villepinte, France, to parents of Congolese descent, Han-Noah Massengo started his development at a number of semi-professional and lower division clubs before joining Monaco’s youth setup back in 2016.

The talented youngster made rapid progress through the various academy levels before enjoying a breakthrough season in the last term. Meanwhile, Bristol City’s start to the 2019-20 campaign wasn’t a particularly impressive one, as the Robins went down 3-1 at home to Leeds United.

Pablo Hernandez, Jack Harrison and Patrick Bamford all found the net, and although Andreas Weimann pulled one back for Lee Johnson’s side, it was nothing more than a mere consolation. 

Having fallen agonisingly short of a promotion playoff spot last season, the fans at Ashton Gate will be expecting their club to go one step further than they did in the previous campaign and break the top-six lock. 

However, an unimpressive defeat in the season-opener was not what the doctor ordered for the Robins and it is now up to Johnson to inspire his team and get them back to winning ways they make the trip to St. Andrew’s to face Birmingham City this weekend. 

Bristol City have already taken significant steps to bolster all areas of their squad this summer, with the likes of Jay Dasilva, Tomas Kalas, Sammie Szmodics, Kasey Palmer, Tommy Rowe, Rene Gilmartin, Robbie Cundy and Daniel Bentley bring amongst those to have come through the door at Ashton gate. 

And with the transfer deadline on Thursday looming large, the Robins are seemingly in the hunt for further recruits, with Monaco starlet Han-Noah Massengo believed to be on Johnson’s radar. 

To put things into perspective, the move, if it materializes, would be an incredible coup for Bristol City this summer, given that the 18-year-old is regarded as a player with the potential to go on and play at the highest level in his homeland. 

Massengo is far from being the finished article, having recently made the jump from the academy to the senior ranks. While one would not expect him to nail down a regular starting role next season itself, the Robins might have a gem on their hands if he goes on to fulfil his promise in English football. 

Bristol City already have the likes of Josh Brownhill and Marlon Pack as regular starters in the middle of the park, however, that shouldn’t have much impact on their pursuit of Massengo.

The 18-year-old will be expected to gradually make the step up to the Championship and given his talent and potential, not many would dare to argue against him not making the grade at Ashton Gate. 

Conclusion

Han-Noah Massengo looks like a real talent at this stage of his career and Bristol City should look at him as one for the future.

Indeed, the amount involved in the transfer is quite big, something which might accentuate the risk factor in this move, although it is apparently a calculated risk that could go on to reap rich dividends in the foreseeable future.
