According to a report in the Chronicle Live, Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Lille’s Edgar Le. The 25-year-old defender was a part of the Lille squad that finished the season with an impressive 2nd place finish.
Last season, the Portuguese international made 21 appearances in all competitions including 16 in the league and he deserves to get more game time in the coming season.
He’s already a Portuguese international, having gone through the youth set-up but has stuttered a little in his development. Le is capable of playing in the centre-back position and the right-back position and his versatility will be vital to the Magpies next season, who have a fairly thin squad.
Newcastle mostly played a three-man backline last season, especially in the second half of the campaign. That turned their fortunes around and Le will have no problem fitting into any backline.
Newcastle have had a fairly solid backline in the last two season, thanks to Rafa Benitez’s organization and he’ll be coming into a well-drilled setup.
The Magpies must keep retain most of their players, as the very impressive Fabian Schar’s future remains uncertain. However, with only a few more days left in the transfer window, the St. James’ Park faithful need someone like him in the heart of the defence.
Newcastle have lost some of their creativity with the departure of Ayoze Perez, who moved to Leicester earlier in the summer but still have most of their backline and midfield intact, which will be massive in their aspirations for the new season.

The Magpies have also lost Salomon Rondon, who was on loan last season and will have to find a new style of football if they are to survive in the league.
Steve Bruce isn’t as celebrated a manager as Benitez and it’s important that Mike Ashley supports him with all the tools in the world to make sure that he can do the best job possible. Thus, Le would be an astute signing.
