Crystal Palace had a poor pre-season and are going into this season with a lot of uncertainty on how they’re going to go about. Towards the end of last season, they heavily depended on Michy Batshuayi to get them the goals.
They’ve also lost their player of the year in Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and the uncertainty over the future of Wilfried Zaha didn’t help much either.
Losing Aaron Wan-Bissaka was definitely a problem for the Eagles as they’ll become weaker defensively, but they had all the money and time to find an ideal replacement. However, they did not make any move to improve or reinforce that position which had been weakened.
One player who they were linked with was Max Aarons of Norwich City. The right-back had a tough outing in his first Premier League game against European champions Liverpool.
He was quite good, as were Norwich, but the Premier League is unforgiving and he’d have learnt a lot from that game. Aarons was one of the best players in the Championship last season, having scored 3 goals and registered 6 assists in all competitions.
He is a typical modern full-back, who can bomb forward and cover the entire flank. He is extremely good going forward and in Daniel Farke’s system, he tucks inside too when required.
Palace currently have Joel Ward, who is quite talented himself, and was quite good before Aaron Wan-Bissaka made his big break. They’ve signed Gary Cahill to add some experience to the backline but seriously lack some quality in the final third under Roy Hodgson.
Palace have quite an old squad and Aarons would’ve added some youthful exuberance, as he’s only 19 years old. His attacking instincts would also allow him to play in an attacking position and he can also play as a left-back if required.

Palace made a slow start to their campaign with a draw against Everton at home. Palace are a very difficult outfit to break down and that’s not likely to change this season because of Roy Hodgson’s rigid 4-4-2 system.
They’ll have to count on that for another season without battling relegation. Aarons would’ve provided them with some creativity and they might regret not doing more to help themselves in that area.
