Celtic FC opinion: Hoops should consider a loan move for Scott McTominay

Earlier in January, both Celtic and Aberdeen were heavily linked with a move for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay (Mirror). The youngster wasn’t getting game-time for the Red Devils at the time and was touted to leave the club for a short spell out on loan.

But the departure of Marouane Fellaini has changed things and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has opted to keep McTominay at the club. The Red Devils are set to make heavy changes across the board in the summer, as they prepare to re-establish their reign in the Premier League (ESPN).

The most successful team in Premier League history, the Red Devils have struggled to dominate domestically since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. They’ve gone through three managers and have seen them all fail to challenge for the Premier League title.

Yet, recent results under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could change things. However, Scott McTominay needs a loan move away. While he is talented, the young Scottish midfielder needs to get more game time and experience.

Celtic should step up and consider making a loan move for the 22-year-old next season, as they look to retain their title. They need another midfielder and Scott McTominay needs game time. It should be the perfect short-term marriage, especially given the state of Celtic’s midfield at the moment.

Though they have Nir Bitton, Eboue Kouassi, Olivier Ntcham, Scott Brown and Scott Allan, none has performed consistently this season. Allan is leaving for Hibernian, Kouassi has spent most of the season injured, and Brown has struggled of late.

The 33-year-old Celtic captain has seen his ageing legs struggle to keep up with the intensity required, this campaign.

The addition of McTominay would boost things up next season and given how well the Scot has played when called upon for Manchester United this season, he should be a great addition for the Celts.

Even if it is a short-term option, it allows the club to play the 22-year-old in multiple positions and see what new additions they need accordingly. A talented and versatile player, McTominay has shown the ability to play as either a deeper-defensive midfielder or in a more advanced box-to-box role.

He will solve a big problem for Celtic, and it’s a move that will be mutually beneficial.

Conclusion

Scott McTominay needs game time. He’s shown that he can be a dangerous player on his day but without experience, the 22-year-old will suffer in his development.

Celtic, on the other hand ,need another midfielder to help cover up the holes in their team, and that’s exactly what Scott McTominay can do for them.
