3 Possible Destinations For Jan Vertonghen Including Manchester United

Share

After the tall, elegant Belgian joined Tottenham Hotspur from Dutch giants Ajax in the summer of 2012 and made a real impact in his first season, it was finally worth believing that Jan Vertonghen would be the mainstay for the Tottenham defence in years to come. However the former Ajax man may leave Spurs if they fail to guarantee Champions League berth. As things start Tottenham fresh from their 4-0 thrashing at Stamford Bridge are increasingly looking gloomy from securing a spot in Europe’s elite competition. So we here at Soccersouls decided to give you three clubs who can pounce on the Belgian to secure his services.

3. Napoli:

Rafa Benitez’s “shaky at the back looking” Napoli side are in dire needs of a centre back who can lead the line. The Parteponei’s defence is the weak link in a team who can perhaps beat anyone on their day. Miguel Britos and Raul Albiol have done a fairly good job but neither of  Fernandez and Henrique, are good enough when thrown up against the big boys of Europe’s elite. If they are to break Juventus’ monopoly in the Serie A, Benitez will have to strengthen his squad, starting from the back. Hence, Vertonghen looks a solid option who will be worth the cash.

2. Borussia Dortmund:

The rumour mill has time and again linked Matt Hummels to Barcelona and with Carles Puyol retiring at the end of the current season, the move looks ever more likely. This would definitely leave a void in the Dortmund back four and Manager Jurgen Klopp would well appreciate the ability of Vertonghen to fill the gap. The Belgian’s rough and tough attitude at the back will suit in Bundesliga and Vertonghen would jump to the chance of playing In  a squad that boasts of world class talents.

1. Manchester United:

With Nemanja Vidic leaving after what has been an era at Old Trafford, David Moyes needs to address the problems at the back to find a balance in his side. Vertonghen, with his imposing presence, passing ability and no nonsense defending can very much be in United’s scheme of things. Tottenham have always been a selling club and no wonder if Moyes splurges the cash, would the Belgian leave even if United fall to qualify for the Champions League? Perhaps only time will provide an apt answer.
