Wolves winning the race to sign this 27-year-old Portuguese star would be a terrific coup by Nuno Santo

Wolves opinion: Nuno Santo to sign Cedric Soares – a brilliant move

According to a report from Italian outlet Tuttomercato Web, Wolverhampton Wanderers are the front runners to sign Southampton’s Cedric Soares. The Portuguese international is currently on loan with Serie A giants Inter Milan but has failed to impress in his short stint there.

The report reveals that Inter have an option to buy Cedric in the summer but only at a steep price of €11.5million. Inter will reject the option and send him back to the Saints in the summer but Cedric’s agent Jorge Mendes has close ties with the Wolves hierarchy and his influence there makes a move look likely.

Wolves are close to gaining European qualification after a stellar return to the Premier League this season. Nuno Santo’s men have been a difficult opposition for most teams this season and one of their shining lights has been right-wing-back Matt Doherty.

The 27-year old’s performances have gone under the radar due to the emergence of Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez but Doherty has quietly been one of Wolves’ best players so far this season.

The Irish international has been an integral part of Nuno Santo’s side, having been directly involved in 14 goals so far this season in all competitions.

His presence in the Wolves backline has been vital but the club are an injury or a suspension away from having no suitable replacement in that position.

Wolves, despite Doherty’s brilliance, need to bring in a suitable backup and Cedric Soares can be more than just a number two at the club. The 27-year-old will have no trouble settling into the Wolves side which boasts of a massive Portuguese contingent.

Cedric is highly experienced in the Premier League and knows its demands very well. The Southampton man would give massive competition to Doherty and this will only bring out the best in both the right-backs.

Conclusion

Cedric has played over 100 games for Southampton but the full-back’s future at the club is essentially over after his January move. Wolves will benefit greatly from Cedric’s acquisition in the summer and Nuno Espirito Santo shouldn’t think twice about making a move for the European Championship winner.

Cedric will also be hugely valuable if the club makes it to the Europa League next season because more games would have to be played in that case. His availability would allow Doherty to be rested at times like these and keep them all fresh.
