According to a report in Morrocan outlet Lions De L Atlas, Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Wolves defender Romain Saiss in the summer window. The 28-year-old has been in and out of the side, but manager Nuno Espirito Santo has used him in different positions when required.
Saiss has featured 17 times in all competitions, 13 of them coming in the league. Wolves have done business with Atletico before, as they got Jonny on loan last summer and then signed the Spaniard in a permanent deal last month.
On the other hand, Saiss’ contract runs out in 2020, hence, he will enter the final 12 months of his deal at the Molineux if he doesn’t sign an extension. Here’s why Wolves should keep the Moroccan international beyond the summer and offer him a new contract:
If we look at the Wolves squad, they have three first-choice central defenders positioned in the manager’s favoured 3-4-1-2 system. However, if one of them gets suspended or injured, there is a lack of ammunition. This is where Saiss has been used, to cover up for one of the players at the back.
The Moroccan played on the left-hand side of the three after Willy Boly was sent off against Manchester City early last month. Furthermore, the 28-year-old is versatile enough to play in defensive midfield as well. In fact, he has started five league games in that position, basically deployed to protect the back-line.
Hence, it is clear that Nuno is using Saiss as a utility player, someone who can be an asset to the squad in any situation. Every team should have a player of this type, as it helps the manager in the hour of need.
Therefore, Wolves should keep hold of the Moroccan and offer him a new deal. Doing the latter would be enough to ward off teams in the summer.
Nuno’s men are having a special season back in the Premier League, and if they finish in the top seven, then Europa League action will be possible next season.

Thus, they should aim to keep the squad together for as long as possible and add signings in certain areas to make this team capable of going the distance in Europe’s second-tier competition.
