According to Daily Mail, Middlesbrough are targeting Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham to replace keeper Darren Randolph, who is linked with West Ham.
Wes Foderingham, 28, is out of contract at Rangers at the end of the season and is essentially a squad player under manager Steven Gerrard.
With Allan McGregor having firmly established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper for Rangers, the 28-year-old has struggled for playing time. He’s only played four senior games across all competitions this season and kept three clean sheets in the process.
With Foderingham’s deal at Ibrox running down, Middlesbrough must go all out to sign him during the January transfer window.
Middlesbrough have endured a miserable campaign under Jonathan Woodgate and are just three points above the relegation zone after Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.
Injuries have played a huge part in Middlesbrough’s struggles this term but those frailties have only emphasised the need for reinforcements in January.
Amidst such mess, the last thing Boro would want to lose is their no.1, Darren Randolph. The 32-year-old is regarded as one of the best shot-stoppers in the second tier and is an important part of Woodgate’s side.
The goalkeeper’s experience is something Boro cannot lose but if West Ham come up with a sizeable offer, Woodgate should replace Randolph with Foderingham in January.
A former England U19 international, he was with Fulham and Crystal Palace as a young player but did not make a league appearance for either club.
Nonetheless, Foderingham has proven to be a decent shot-stopper and would be an ideal replacement for Randolph. At 28, the time might just be right for him to test his credentials in England’s second tier.
Given that Foderingham is only going to warm the substitutes’ bench, it would make sense for the goalkeeper to leave Rangers in the January transfer window. And a move to Middlesbrough might help him get his career back on track.
