Why Tottenham’s £23m Signing Will Be Crucial To Their Premier League Aspirations

Why The Capture Of Serge Aurier Is One Of The Best Transfers In This Inflated Window

The transfer window madness is finally over and the Premier League outfits confirmed their incomings as well as outgoings before yesterday’s 11:00 p.m. deadline. Many deals broke down late in the window whereas a few clubs have successfully acquired their transfer targets.

Tottenham are arguably one of those clubs who had a quiet window all summer but managed to negotiate a number of impressive deals in the closing hours. Spurs matched Chelsea’s bid for Swansea City hitman Fernando Llorente and the player rejected the Champions in order to join Pochettino’s squad for the ongoing campaign. Also, they brought in former Paris St-Germain right-back Serge Aurier as a replacement for right-back Kyle Walker who completed a switch to league counterparts Manchester City.

Spurs have further strengthened their back-line with former Ajax centre-back Davinson Sanchez and Argentine youth international Juan Foyth. But the £23m signing of Aurier is probably one of the shrewdest bit of transfers in this window. The 24-year-old Ivorian international had three successful campaigns with French giants Paris St-Germain before joining the North London heavyweights.

Aurier progressed through the youth ranks of French outfit Lens and joined Toulouse FC back in the summer of 2012. He had a couple of impressive seasons there and eventually got noticed by Paris St-Germain, who loaned him in for the 2014-15 season. His move was made permanent in the following summer after some imposing performances from him. But he struggled to achieve regular first-team football due to the presence of Marquinhos and last season’s recruit Thomas Meunier. The player thus decided to explore his options and has now made a switch to English football.

The Ivorian international is a like-to-like replacement for Englishman Kyle Walker and will slot straight into their squad due to the ongoing injury concerns of Kieran Trippier, who was supposed to earn a regular slot in the absence of his fellow countryman for who he deputised last season.

Kyle Walker-Peters, the 20-year-old academy prodigy was promoted during pre-season as Kyle Walker’s replacement, but it will be too early for the youngster to fill Walker’s boots despite impressing in Spurs’ season opener against Newcastle United.

Tottenham, the 2016-17 Premier League runners-up were looking for a quality resource and Aurier’s experience will help them perform better in 2017-18 Champions League. Aurier has pace as well as a strong physical presence to fit into the Premier League and his crosses and runs down the right flank will create more opportunities for Tottenham’s lethal attackers up front.

Aurier is the best thing that has happened for Tottenham Hotspur this summer and Mauricio Pochettino can bank on the Ivorian in order to resume their title fight that his side missed out on last term despite delivering a stellar show.
