Tottenham raiding PL rivals to sign this 27-year-old ace would shore up their weak defence

Why Tottenham should go all out to sign Fabian Schar in January

Back in May, the Daily Mirror had claimed that Tottenham and Arsenal were interested in Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar. The 27-year-old joined Newcastle from Spanish side Deportivo de La Coruna after their relegation from top-flight last summer.

He enjoyed a solid debut season in the Premier League, helping the Magpies finish 13th in the table last season. The Swiss had made 28 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals.

The defender has been one of the impressive performers for Newcastle in an otherwise disappointing 2019/20 campaign so far. With Schar impressing in Steve Bruce’s five-man backline, Tottenham would be wise to rekindle their interest in him during the January transfer window.

Tottenham haven’t enjoyed a good start to the 2019/20 season, with their defence looking the most vulnerable.

Despite being a well-drilled, disciplined and organised side under Mauricio Pochettino over the last few years, that hasn’t been the case this time around. Spurs have already conceded 17 goals in 12 games — which doesn’t bode well for a side chasing a top-four finish.

Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld — two pillars of the Spurs backline— haven’t been at their best, while Davinson Sanchez is rather unreliable.

Furthermore, with Vertonghen and Alderweireld running out their contracts at the end of the season, Pochettino needs to plan for the future and recruit a couple of quality defenders in January. To put things plainly, the Spurs boss should make a move for Fabian Schar.

Plus, the former FC Basel defender has also shown a good eye for goal, bagging four last season and already has one under his banner this term.

Verdict

At 27, Schar still has his very best years ahead of him. He wouldn’t need the settling-in period that a player from elsewhere in the world would need. Thus, Spurs must go all out to sign the Newcastle defender in the New Year.
