Why Tottenham reviving their interest in £36m Man United star would be a step in the right direction

Why Tottenham should sign Anthony Martial in January

According to reports in Italian outlet Calciomercato, Tottenham target and Manchester United star Anthony Martial has already rejected multiple offers of a new contract. Italian giants Juventus and German champions Bayern Munich are also keeping close tabs on the player.

Martial joined United in 2015 for a fee of around £36m from French club Monaco. While he did well under Louis Van Gaal, it hasn’t been smooth sailing for him under Jose Mourinho since the Portuguese took charge in 2016.

As per the report, the 22-year-old’s relationship isn’t the best with the manager and in the summer, his agent publicly claimed that the player wanted to leave. Back then, the suggestion was that Spurs were leading the race to sign the Frenchman.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men eventually went onto buy no one in the summer but they should sign quality players in the near future to improve their squad and challenge for trophies. Martial could be a great addition. Here’s why:

Martial can be a game-changer

If we look at the Tottenham squad, they have quality players who can challenge anybody in world football. However, they lack the kind of squad depth which is necessary for teams who play in every competition during the course of a season.

Hence, when there is an injury or two, the squad is stretched and it becomes very difficult for the manager. If they get Martial, not only will the Frenchman improve their squad, but would also enhance the quality of their first-team.

The 22-year-old is a versatile forward player who can play as a striker, as a left-winger and as a support striker. Hence, if Harry Kane needs a partner, Martial can be the one. If Pochettino requires a game-changer, the Frenchman is quite simply the one.

In a way, Spurs can buy an able backup striker who can also play well in other positions. Hence, the club can strike two targets in one move by getting the Manchester United star.

Verdict

Martial is a quality player who showed his class when he scored a brace against Chelsea in the 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

We all know his propensities to score goals and be a potential game-changer whenever he steps onto the pitch. Tottenham need a player like him to add that X-factor to their squad, which will help them to achieve success in the future.
