Why This Premier League Swap Deal Could Word Excellently For Tottenham Hotspur

Share

Smart deals aren’t the norm in the Premier League but Mauricio Pochettino could well have struck gold if the rumours are to be believed. Tottenham had tried to sign Victor Wanyama from Southampton at the start of the season but their efforts were rebuffed by the Saints as they relented by not selling the defensive midfielder.

It seems that the deal could well take place now with another player in the deal; Andros Townsend seems to be the player who could be moving the other way and that could lead to a happy reunion between Pochettino and Wanyama, who he managed at Southampton.

A swap to suit both teams

Tottenham have been looking to increase their defensive midfielder options this season with only Eric Dier as the recognized defensive midfielder they have and he is actually a centre back who has been pushed up to provide them the cover.

The likes of Mason, Dembele and Bentaleb aren’t really complete defensive midfielders and if Spurs are to take the next level in their quest to make it into the Champions League once again, they need to have someone who can win the balls and tackle the opposition in the middle of the park.

Wanyama had stated earlier that he wants to leave the club and this January window could well be fruitful for the Kenyan. The 24-year-old has been a mainstay in the heart of the Southampton team and could well be the answer to Spurs’ midfield problems.

Ronald Koeman also wants to have a few options in attack and this is where Andros Townsend will come into the picture. The English winger might have broken into the Spurs team but hasn’t been able to hold a place in the team and has only made two starts this season, both coming in the Europa League.

The Spurs attacker could well do with a move away from White Hart Lane and at only 24-years-old, he still has time to develop and hone his skill. The only winger that Southampton have that matches the pace and trickery or Townsend is Sadio Mane and Koeman knows that he needs someone to play alongside the wily attacker.

Townsend and Mane down the wings for Southampton would be a frightening proposition for any opponent in the league with both players known for their trickery and pace. The only problem with Townsend is that he seems to have become a one trick pony and he needs to add another dimension to his game, which is a problem that most young players face at a certain point in their career.

Win-win situations for both clubs, Southampton get another attacker that can go straight into their team. Tottenham get the defensive midfielder that they have required and both players get playing time. This could well work out if it takes place and Pochettino certainly seems intent on getting his man, who knows, this transfer could well take them to the top four in the league.
