Why signing Leroy Fer in the summer would toughen up Aston Villa’s midfield

According to reports from Wales Online, Swansea City midfielder and captain Leroy Fer was a subject of a large amount of interest from fellow Championship club Aston Villa as they looked to plug the gaps in what has been a pretty leaky defence this term.

He was touted to join Villa during the winter window, with Wales Online claiming that he was close to completing a deadline day move to Villa Park to join the Villans’ hunt for the playoff spots.

Aston Villa have has an excellent season in front of goal so far, thanks to some excellent work by on-loan Chelsea starlet Tammy Abraham. He has scored 20 goals in his 25 appearances in front of the Villa fans and has really turned into a fan favourite.

His scoring rate has been outstanding right from day one of the season and it is yet to subside. With an assist to his name as well, Tammy has really stepped up to the plate for Villa when they needed someone to lead from the front.

While it has all been hunky-dory at Villa Park in an attacking sense, the defensive fragility in the team is an issue that Dean Smith is yet to properly address.

The defenders in this Villa team aren’t bad players but it just seems like a gel to hold the defence line together is just what they need.

As suggested by Wales Online, they did make a move for Dutchman Leroy Fer on deadline with a view of playing him in front of the defence where he can provide cover for the back-line and also help the team to launch attacks.

Fer has been a Swansea player for almost 3 years now and during this time, he has developed into one of their main players, so much so that he was even given the captain’s armband.

Fer has been very good for Swansea this campaign, having featured in 24 league games so far. He has scored a goal and set up three over the course of the season. His movement and sharpness on the ball will certainly aid the Villa defenders.

While he can slot in at the back if necessary, his ability on the ball and his range of passing from the middle of the park can eventually become a massive asset for Dean Smith’s men.

Tammy, in particular, would’ve been quite thankful for bringing a talented player like Fer into the Villa team. Though they weren’t able to complete this move in the winter window, they shouldn’t think twice about completing this signing come the end of the season.
