Why signing this 30-year-old speedy beast could be a great move for Wolves

Share

According to reports, newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers have emerged as the favourites to sign Bakary Sako from Crystal Palace this summer.

Sako, who is out of contract at Selhurst Park, has been offered a new deal by the Eagles. However, his former club Wolves are interested in re-signing the player. The Mali international joined Palace from Wolves in 2015.

The 30-year-old forward has struggled with injuries for the large majority of his time at Palace. But Sako returned to full fitness and form last season as he scored six goals under manager Roy Hodgson.

However, Sako’s season was cut short when he suffered a fractured ankle and damaged ligaments in January. And with his contract with Palace set to expire at the end of the month, Wolves should take a gamble on Sako.

Sako joined Wolves from French club Saint-Etienne and went onto become a fan-favourite at Molineux. He made well over 100 appearances for the club between 2012 and 2015. In his debut season with Wolves, the Malian enjoyed a really good campaign as he scored ten goals and provided 11 assists. Despite his heroics in front of goal, Sako couldn’t save Wolves from getting relegated to League One.

In League One, Sako showed tremendous goalscoring form and took the division by storm as he guided Wolves to the league title. He was the joint top goalscorer in the division and was named in the 2013/14 League One team of the season.

In his final season in Midlands, the attacker was named in the 2014/15 Championship team of the season, which prompted Palace to sign him in the summer of 2015. But things haven’t panned out the way Sako would have hoped for at Selhurst Park due to his recurrent injury problems.

Nuno Espírito Santo

But Sako scored six goals in all competitions last season. When fully fit and running, he was dangerous and looked like a player reborn under Hodgson before another injury cut short his resurgence.

Speaking about Wolves, attacking reinforcements are a must in the summer if Nuno Espirito Santo wants to his side to remain in the Premier League beyond the 2018/19 campaign. A move for Sako would be perfect for Wolves as he has proven himself in the Premier League.

Sako’s pace and power can cause problems to any defence, while his versatility would also come handy for Wolves. A move back to his former stomping ground should surely appeal to Sako. All in all, the Malian would be a top addition for the Midlands club.
