Why West Ham should offer more than a one-year contract to this out of contract English star

Share

According to reports, West Ham are only willing to offer Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere a one-year contract.

The England international has already confirmed that he will be leaving Arsenal after 17 years at the club after a chat with new manager Unai Emery. Wilshere’s contract expires at the end of the month and his availability on a free transfer has caught the eye of West Ham, who will be under Manuel Pellegrini’s management next term.

However, due to fitness concerns, the Hammers are only offering Wilshere an initial one-year contract. They want the England international to prove his fitness and regain his form before offering him a longer deal. While it may suit West Ham’s agenda, offering only a one-year deal to someone of Wilshere’s quality shows a lack of respect for the player.

Jack Wilshere

Pellegrini has the big task of turning around West Ham’s fortunes after their poor season last term. The Chilean has done very well so far in the summer transfer market, signing some quality players to reinforce his current squad. And Wilshere could be an ideal addition to West Ham.

While many still question whether Wilshere can stay fit and perform on a regular basis, he certainly answered some of those critics during the 2017/18 campaign when he made 38 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners, scoring twice and providing a further six assists.

The England international will bring more creativity and guile required in the middle of the park for the Hammers. When fully fit and running, Wilshere is one of the most exciting players to watch in the Premier League. His impeccable technique and ability to unlock any defence would be a great asset for West Ham after their midfielders endured a tough time last season.

The likes of Cheikhou Kouyate, Pedro Obiang and Edimilson Fernandes had a tough time in the middle of the park, while Mark Noble showed signs of ageing. The Hammers need some spark in midfield next season and who better than Wilshere to provide it? The classy operator would offer bite and add a different dimension to West Ham’s midfield with his ability to break the lines.

Jack Wilshere

However, there seems little point in making a one-year offer to Wilshere, especially as other clubs could offer him better terms and lure him away from right under West Ham’s nose.

Wilshere proved that he is back to his best from a fitness perspective last season, and the Hammers should offer him a longer contract.  West Ham owners David Gold and David Sullivan need to be more realistic in their approach and show a bit more respect to one of England’s finest midfielders.

And if West Ham manage to sign Wilshere in the summer, it could turn out to be a really important piece of business for the Irons.
