Sheffield United opinion: Should the Blades sign Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo

Sheffield United’s growth over the last few years has been nothing short of incredible. Chris Wilder’s side are now on the brink of promotion to the Premier League.

Sitting one point above Leeds United after the 1-0 win earlier in the day, the Blades will now be looking to challenge Norwich for the title. Irrespective of their league status, Wilder needs to address the needs of his sides with regards to reinforcements and an area they are desperately short in, is left-back.

Irishman Enda Stevens has missed just 21 minutes all season and although he has been brilliant, the full-back has been overused. The Blades need to bring in a backup to Stevens and Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo would be a smart addition.

Bolingoli-Mbombo was born in a footballing family and is the cousin of Manchester United spearhead Romelu Lukaku.

Although the full-back’s career path hasn’t quite been as impressive as Lukaku, he has a bright future ahead of him and a move to the Premier League could be the platform he needs to showcase himself.

Bolingoli-Mbombo came through the ranks at Club Brugge before joining Austrian giants Rapid Vienna in 2017. The Belgian made 28 appearances in the Bundesliga in his debut season and picked up 5 assists.

The Belgian, in some ways, is like Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon. Like the Englishman, Bolingoli-Mbombo has been used in various positions on the bitch. Be it in his natural left-back position or further up as a left winger or even as a striker, the 23-year-old can do a job.

Bolingoli-Mbombo is rapid and has very good control over the ball. He uses his acceleration to brilliant effect in his dangerous overlapping runs and uses his fantastic left foot to whip crosses into the box.

His pace also helps him to get in between two opposition players and his reading of the game allows him to intercept brilliantly.

The Belgian possesses excellent reactions and can recover quickly, thanks to his agility. His powerful runs on the left flank would remind of you of former Lyon winger Michel Bastos and like the Brazilian, Mbombo is capable of dribbling his way into the box without any trouble.

Conclusion

Sheffield United’s story over the last few years has been incredible and promotion to the Premier League would be unbelievable. Chris Wilder’s additions in the summer have to smart and Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo would be a terrific signing.

The Belgian’s versatility opens up a wide range of options to Wilder and would suit brilliantly in his system of using wing-backs over natural full-backs.

Mbombo could also provide cover when needed for Sheffield’s ageing strike force of Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick and being only 23, he will be a worthy investment.
