According to a report from the Chronicle Live, Newcastle United have been offered the chance to re-sign Papiss Cisse in January.
Papiss Cisse, 34, who currently plays for Turkish Super Lig side Antalyaspor, has scored nine goals in nine games this season. As a result, Antalyaspor sit top of the league with their star striker bagging a brace in a crucial win over Fenerbahce last month.
A bid of £3m is thought to be enough to persuade the Turkish club to sell the Senegalese still on top goalscoring form, the report adds. That being said, Newcastle United must look to bring back Cisse in January.
Newcastle are struggling under Steve Bruce and find themselves just a point above the relegation zone. Two points dropped at home to Wolves on Sunday has heaped more pressure on Bruce, whose side are royally lacking goals.
The Magpies broke their transfer record by signing Joelinton from Hoffenheim, but the burly Brazilian has netted just once in 10 games.
Joelinton has lacked service from his fellow forwards, with none of Miguel Almiron or Allan Saint-Maximin producing consistent performances. Meanwhile, striking alternatives Andy Carroll and Yoshinori Muto are yet to break their duck this season.
Newcastle’s decision to bring back homegrown hero Carroll on a free transfer hasn’t paid rich dividends, as the 30-year-old has managed just 89 minutes of football but with no goal contributions over four appearances. With the Toon Army finding it difficult to score goals, Bruce could do well with a short-term deal for Papiss Cisse.
Cisse spent four seasons at St James’ Park from 2012-16, scoring 37 goals. He was a popular figure with the Geordies and his tally of 37 Premier League goals was impressive.
Having played in England before, the veteran forward is experienced and knows what it takes to succeed in the Premier League.
The Senegalese may have turned 34 but he still has a couple of years left to offer at the highest level. He is primarily known for his aggression and willingness to close down the ball-carrying defenders, making him an effective cog in the first line of press.
Cisse is a predator in the box, someone who can not only help his team create chances but is also quite reliable in front of goal.
On a short-term deal, Cisse would be a smart signing for Newcastle. His tenacity and ability to score goals, even at the ripe age of 34, would make him an excellent partner for the misfiring Joelinton.
