According to a report in Nigerian source Telegraph, Arsenal could rekindle their interest in signing Leicester City midfielder Wilfried Ndidi during the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Gunners could bid around £50m to test the Foxes’ resolve of keeping their best defensive midfielder. The north London side may add Granit Xhaka to possibly make it a swap deal rather than a one-way move. (h/t Nigerian source Telegraph)
Unai Emery’s men have made a mediocre start to the season and the discontentment around the Emirates is there for everyone to see.
However, things worsened when Xhaka swore the fans off while he was getting subbed in a game against Crystal Palace (h/t The Metro). While that behaviour is alone enough to get the Switzerland international sold, his overall game hasn’t improved for some time now.
Here’s why Arsenal would be right to go ahead with this swap move:
Wilfried Ndidi is predominantly a defensive midfielder, who has been doing a great job for Leicester since joining them from Genk. He can also operate as a centre-back if required.
At just 22, he has played 34 games for the Nigeria national team and is one of the better defensive midfielders in the Premier League.
In terms of his attributes, Ndidi is a dynamic player who reads the game well to make defensive contributions. He has the pace to cover the ground well and protect the back-line. He is a solid passer of the ball and has a good long-range shot in him. Furthermore, Ndidi is a physically strong player.
Thus, the Nigeria international would offer more to Arsenal’s midfield structure as compared to Granit Xhaka.
Hence, the Gunners shouldn’t hesitate in forking out the cash to sign Wilfried Ndidi. This is irrespective of whether they sell Xhaka or not.
