Why Mourinho must reunite with his former star to fire Man United to the Premier League title

Mourinho and Gary Cahill would be the perfect reunion to tighten the Red Devils’ backline

Manchester United have been a busy club in the transfer market so far with a number of incoming players and outgoing ones. Manager Jose Mourinho will be aiming to make a strong impression next season after the club failed to live up to expectations last time out.

Despite making a number of high-profile signings over the last two years, the Red Devils have failed to display quality on the field.

The Red Devils have already signed Fred and Diogo Dalot in the last one month and the club are aiming to make more additions to bolster the squad. Mourinho is in the market for a new centre-back this summer and the club have been linked with Chelsea defender Gary Cahill.

Mourinho is reportedly interested in signing the out of favour defender, who could be replaced at the club, with speculation suggesting that Juventus defender Daniele Rugani is close to joining the Blues.

Club captain Gary Cahill has previously worked with Mourinho during his time with the Blues and the pair shares a healthy relationship. Cahill has lifted a total of 7 trophies during his time in London, which includes 2 Premier League titles and 1 Champions League in 2011/12.

Gary Cahill

Over the years, Gary Cahill has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent defenders. He is part of a backline that has been rigid and tough to breach over the last few seasons. Not a lot players could easily get past the English defender during his prime days.

But over the last two years, Cahill has seen his opportunities drastically reduce. The emergence of Andreas Christensen and the purchase of Antonio Rudiger ensured that Cahill was kept on the bench.

He has made a total of 189 appearances since joining the club from Bolton Wanderers in 2012. The 32-year-old has been a commander and an ever reliable defender for the Blues. Cahill made a total of 24 appearances in the Premier League last season. He also made 1 appearance for the Three Lions at the World Cup in Russia.

The defender’s experience and knowledge of the game make him one of the most influential defenders in the Premier League. Cahill is calm and composed on the ball, is excellent at handling pressure, often getting himself out of the tightest of situations.

The former Bolton Wanderers defender is also an accurate passer of the ball, boasting an average pass success rate of 89% in the league last season. He also averaged a pass success rate of 92.2% in the Champions League.

Gary Cahill

The arrival of Daniele Rugani would see Cahill fall further down the pecking order, which means the player could be convinced to make the move to Old Trafford. Mourinho is also familiar with the defender’s ability and the pair could unite once again.

Cahill’s vast experience in the Premier League makes him an enticing prospect to have in any squad. His arrival would provide Mourinho with ample cover and depth at the back. He should certainly sign up his former defender and bring him over to Manchester United.
