Why Middlesbrough Has Done An Excellent Job In Acquiring This Former Leeds United Man

Why Garry Monk Would Be The Right Man To Takeover At Middlesbrough

After the disappointment of relegation from the Premier League truly settles in, Middlesbrough needed to think carefully about their future, and choosing the right manager was pivotal to that. They have done a good job in bringing Garry Monk in as their new manager.

Aitor Karanka was relieved of his post back in March, leaving Steve Agnew to oversee team matters until the inevitable happened. Karanka may now end up at Leeds United and in another typical Championship merry-go-round, their former boss Garry Monk has been chosen as the man to lead Boro back up.

Monk won plenty of plaudits for his handling of Leeds United last season. However, given the tumultuous nature of that club, it is perhaps no surprise he chose not to extend his contract. It shouldn’t be underestimated how important is it when a talented manager becomes available and Monk seems like a natural fit for Middlesbrough; no compensation to pay and a manager already proven in guiding a side at this level to the upper reaches of the league.

Garry Monk is generally regarded in the game as a head coach with a big future. So looking ahead, this could be an excellent move for Boro in the long term. The former Swansea City player and manager was also linked with north-east rivals Sunderland, as the Wearsiders lost David Moyes after their own demotion was confirmed.

Taking the long view; Monk is just starting his managerial career and is sure to improve with each season that passes. Whatever happened at Leeds last season behind the scenes will have been a learning curve and there is little doubt that Boro fans will see him as a top appointment.

Although stats cannot tell us everything, given that various budget limitations usually affect how well a manager does, Garry Monk averaged 1.47 points per game in England across both the Championship and the Premier League with Leeds United and Swansea City. At Leeds alone, it was 1.70, which reads rather well. The fact that it was achieved in this division and as recently as last season bodes well for Boro.

Presumably, Monk is settled not too far from Middlesbrough and this too is a plus for both parties; no settling-in period, nor awkwardness and not being unfamiliar with their surroundings.

Well done Middlesbrough. Garry Monk is the man to lead you back into the Premier League.
