Why Manchester United must make a move for the Championship’s ‘most expensive’ player this summer

As per a report from The Mirror, Manchester United are keen on bringing Wolverhampton Wanderers hotshot Ruben Neves to Old Trafford this summer.

The report also goes to claim that the club want him to act as a long-term replacement for Ander Herrera, whose future with United seems uncertain right now. And at just 21 years of age, Neves has established himself as one of the most potent and promising young stars in the Championship this season.

Neves joined Wolves from Porto in a summer transfer last year in a deal around £15m that made him the Championship’s most expensive player ever.

Since then, he has been in excellent form and has played a crucial hand in helping the club get to where they are today. He has chipped in with four goals as well and has performed against some of the best sides in the Championship with admirable gusto and power.

Anybody who has followed the Championship this season will be aware of what he is capable of and it comes as no surprise that Manchester United are gunning for a move. The way he can exert control on a pitch and dictate proceedings is absolutely delightful.

United certainly need a player like that. They need somebody who can sit deep comfortably and control the game while also making smart counter-attacking moves. And Neves has done that on several occasions for the high-flying Championship outfit this season.

He can make a number of sublime passes which often contribute to a lot of offensive runs made by the club – usually resulting in goals. To have a player like Neves at Old Trafford can remarkably turn United’s fortunes for the better and they will undoubtedly make a solid approach for his signature. But one must bear in mind that Neves left a club like Porto to fight it out in the Championship and has been extremely committed to the Wolves’ cause.

Hence, the lure of a big-money deal and Champions League football is unlikely to sway his mind. Furthermore, given how things are falling apart at United, it makes more sense for the youngster to stay put and continue with his growth under Nuno Espirito Santo’s watchful eye.

Moving to a club as chaotic as United will hamper his regular game time and that can prove to be detrimental to his growth and progress in the long run. Thus, even though he can be a solid addition to the club, it might be in his best interest to stay away from the sinking ship that is Manchester United right now.
