Why Leeds re-signing this 29-year-old Championship star would be a great move for all involved

Why Adam Clayton Returning To Leeds Would Be A Great Move For All Parties

Middlesborough star Adam Clayton has been linked with several Championship sides this window and may yet leave Tony Pulis’s side by the end of the month.

With just a few days to go it appears that Nottingham Forest are favourites to reunite Aitor Karanka with his former player, however, Leeds United are still in the hunt as they wish to bring him back to Elland Road. The player himself has not yet expressed an interest but he recently stated that he had moved house on social media, not revealing where to in the post.

Adam Clayton has had limited opportunities to prove himself at Boro this season and has been in and out of the side under Tony Pulis. He has 15 appearances to his name in the league and was only a substitute in their big win over Queen’s Park Rangers last time out. The 29-year-old will most likely be looking to make a move to secure first team football, and end his mixed spell with Middlesborough.

The possible move to Leeds United makes a lot of sense as Clayton had a productive spell in Yorkshire between 2010 and 2012 and he will feel that he has unfinished business with The Whites.

He was forced out under Neil Warnock six years ago and it is likely that he would like to try and help the Leeds United team get to the next level. Friend and former teammate Adam Forshaw has already made the move to Leeds from Boro this window so perhaps he will want to follow his example.

Nottingham Forest looks like a slightly harder sell for the man from Manchester as the club are unlikely to make a push for the playoffs.

Although Aitor Karanka may want to change the style of the team, they are currently a fast-paced young outfit with bags of potential, Clayton may look out of place. Karanka may, on the other hand, feel that Clayton can bring experience and practicality to a team that needs more discipline than it currently has.

Whichever move Clayton decides to take it is clear that he is becoming unwanted at Middlesborough and a solid Championship player like him would improve most teams in the league.

He is not a signing that will get Leeds fans off their seats but a signing to shore up their team in the run-up to the playoffs. Thomas Christiansen will no doubt be thinking that he can’t lose by taking a gamble on him and will look to wrap the deal up soon.
