Why Celtic should plot a January swoop for Andraz Sporar

According to the Daily Mail, Celtic are weighing up a swoop for £5million-rated Slovan Bratislava star Andraz Sporar.

The Hoops sent scouts to watch the Slovenia international during his side’s 4-2 Europa League defeat to Braga on Thursday. He scored in the game and he’s also netted against Poland, Besiktas and Wolves this season.

Andraz Sporar, 25, who is contracted until 2023, has been in sensational form this season, having hit 20 goals in 26 games for Slovan Bratislava, five of which have come in the Europa League group stage as he continues to shine on a bigger stage.

With the Slovenian scoring goals left, right and centre at the moment, Celtic must go all out to sign him during the January transfer window.

If Celtic are to maintain their dominance in Scotland and also do well in Europe, Neil Lennon must aim to bolster his squad with a couple of additions. A striker has to be at the top of the priority list given Lennon has limited options up front.

Odsonne Edouard is the club’s first-choice striker and he has been bagging goals for fun this season. The Frenchman is in blistering form, smashing 15 goals and six assists across all competitions so far this season.

However, as Leigh Griffiths and Vakoun Bayo have endured injury-hit campaigns, Lennon cannot solely rely on Edouard to continue firing. Looking for a quality back-up would be the right thing to do.

In that regard, Andraz Sporar would be a smart fit at Parkhead. Sporar is a player who knows where the goal is, as his 20 goals in 26 appearances for Bratislava and Slovenia testify it.

He can share the goalscoring burden alongside Edouard. At 25, the Slovenian is entering the prime years of his career and that makes him a wise investment for the Hoops.

Verdict

All in all, Celtic’s interest in Sporar tells one what Lennon wants during the January transfer window. Sporar is a potent goalscorer and his innate ability to put himself in promising positions to score goals could see him thrive playing alongside the likes of Edouard, James Forrest, Ryan Christie and Mohamed Elyounoussi.

The Slovenia international has the tools to succeed in Scottish football and Celtic must not hesitate to splash £5m for his services.
