Chelsea signing this 24-year-old skipper from the Serie A would represent a massive coup

Why Alessio Romagnoli could be a brilliant signing for Chelsea

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was not able to spend during the past summer transfer window, owing to the transfer ban put by FIFA on the club. Now that the transfer ban has been lifted and the London club is free to spend.

As things stand, the Blues are on the brink of losing their spot in the top-four. And they must splash the cash to help boost their Champions League qualification hopes, following a recent slump in form.

One of the problems that Chelsea have had trouble with is the fact that they continue to ship goals. The form of some of their defenders hasn’t been great, leading to the Blues’ inability to stop the opposition from scoring.

The form of Kurt Zouma, Fikayo Tomori and Andreas Christensen has been hot and cold, while Antonio Rudiger has struggled with injuries this campaign.

While it makes such a difference to see Rudiger back at the heart of the defence, Lampard should address the glaring area of concern in January.

Back in January 2017, the Calciomercato (h/t The Sun) had claimed that Chelsea were interested in signing AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli. However, a deal didn’t go through and he has since stayed put at the club.

A product of AS Roma’s youth system, Alessio Romagnoli, 24, came to AC Milan in the summer of 2015. At the age of 20, he was seen as a crucial part of the club’s future. Since arriving at San Siro, he has become a regular fixture at the back. The 24-year-old is Milan’s skipper and one of the strongest defenders in Italy right now.

This season, Romagnoli has played 16 games in the Serie A. In what has been an inconsistent season for Milan, he has been one of those players who have kept the club alive. Keeping his consistent performances over the last couple of seasons in Serie A in mind, Chelsea must rekindle their interest to sign the defender.

The Italy international is dominant in the air and is extremely aggressive. He’s also a real leader as he’s vocal and can be seen constantly barking orders.

Romagnoli is also comfortable with the ball at his feet, playing line-breaking passes and loves a dribble in his own half to break a high-press from the opposition.

In the video below, one can get a glimpse of Romagnoli’s style of play and the qualities he would bring to Stamford Bridge.

Romagnoli fits the bill as a young, dominant centre-back, who showcases an impressive range of passing. Chelsea must go all out to sign the Italian as it already looks like it’s going to be a very long season.
