According to a report from the Sun, Manchester United are eyeing PFC Krylia Sovetov striker Aleksandr Sobolev ahead of the January transfer window.
Aleksandr Sobolev, 22, has just won a place in Russia’s national side after topping the league’s scoring charts. He has impressed in the Russian Premier League with 10 goals and three assists in 13 games so far for Krylia Sovetov.
Although the Russian marksman has a contract at the club until January 2022, the Samara-based club could listen to offers above £15million, adds the report.
Manchester United have won just two of their opening eight Premier League matches so far this season to sit just two points above the relegation zone going into the international break.
Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle, as well as being an embarrassing experience, was the latest in a long line of setbacks. The Red Devils have won just five of their last 22 matches across all competitions, plunging Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s long-term future into uncertainty in the process.
Last week, Solskjaer admitted he needs to strengthen upfront after letting Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez leave the club for Inter Milan in the summer. The Red Devils have royally struggled in front of goal this season, managing just nine in eight Premier League outings.
Four of those came in the same game against Chelsea on the opening weekend, so it doesn’t come as a surprise to see Solskjaer wanting a striker in the New Year.
The likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are not prolific goalscorers, while Mason Greenwood has just turned 18 and cannot be expected to lead United’s attack week in and week out.
Surely, the Red Devils need to bolster the striker department if they are hoping to finish in the top four this season.
Aleksandr Sobolev would be a good fit at Old Trafford. He fits the mould of young, exciting and hungrier players United are looking to invest under Solskjaer in order to rebuild the squad.
Standing at 6ft 5in tall, Sobolev is a strong and powerful striker who is a real handful for defenders in the box.
The Russian makes it up for his lack of pace with his work rate, stamina and ability to hold the ball up. He’ll offer a different dimension to the United attack, whilst adding quality as well as competition for the likes of Martial, Rashford and Greenwood.
Although Sobolev lacks the experience of Premier League, he has proven himself in Russia and has the qualities to make a difference at Old Trafford.
The 22-year-old Russian certainly looks a talent and potentially exciting addition for United, but time will tell if they can strike a deal for him if he emerges as their top target in January.
