Who’s this 21-year-old Olympic Bronze medalist that Rangers are targeting? The next big talent?

Share

According to reports, Scottish giants Rangers are trying to sign AS Roma striker Umar Sadiq on a season-long loan deal.

The 21-year-old Nigerian spent the second half of the 2017/18 campaign on loan at Dutch outfit NAC Breda, scoring five goals in 13 Eredivisie games.

Sadiq’s solid performances in the Netherlands have caught the attention of Rangers, who have already made seven signings this summer under new manager Steven Gerrard.

Without much ado, let us have a closer look at Sadiq’s profile.

Born on 2 February 1997 in Nigeria, Sadiq started his career at Abuja FC before moving to Italian outfit Spezia in 2013. After scoring a truckload of goals for Spezia, Roma first snapped him up on a season-long loan deal in 2015 before making his move permanent the following year.

The Nigerian has played very little for Roma and his lack of game time has seen him spend loan stints with Bologna, Torino and NAC Breda. In NAC colours, Sadiq impressed a lot last season and gave a glimpse of his sublime talent.

On the international front, Sadiq was selected by Nigeria to take part in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. He scored 4 goals to help his country win a famous bronze medal.

The youngster is a giant of a forward with a prominent aerial ability and unrivaled strength. Standing at 6ft 3.5 in, Sadiq is all about power and is a real handful for defenders both in the air and with the ball at his feet. Despite possessing a tall figure, he is surprisingly fast and often makes surging runs into the opponents’ penalty box.

Sadiq is also highly energetic and makes intelligent movements both inside and outside the penalty area. At such a tender age, the Nigerian is also highly composed in front of goal. Sadiq is a poacher as he often looks to capitalise on defensive mistakes. However, his biggest drawback is his lack of experience.

There is no doubt that Sadiq is one the biggest young talents to have emerged from Africa. The way he demonstrated his skill and goalscoring abilities last season at NAC Breda suggest that he is ready for more regular first-team action next term.

He is still developing and progressing as a striker and needs regular game time to unlock his true potential. A move to Rangers could be the perfect destination for the young Nigerian. Working with  Gerrard would help Sadiq improve his game massively.

So, if an offer comes from Rangers this summer, Sadiq must not think twice about joining the Scottish giants.
