Who Is This Brazilian Attacker That Manchester United Are Targeting? Everything You Need To Know

Share

After three years of mediocrity, Manchester United have brought in Jose Mourinho to steady the sinking ship. The Portuguese is well aware of the task in front of him and therefore has taken a proactive approach to transfer business this summer. He has already added three quality players and is on the lookout for that one final piece of the jigsaw puzzle. Amidst rumours linking Pogba with a move to United, there have also been talks regarding Gabriel Jesus moving to Old Trafford this summer. United will not have the distraction Europe next season rather they can focus fully on mounting a proper title challenge.

Jesus is a Brazilian left-winger who currently plays for Palmeiras is expected to leave his home country this summer amidst interest from a number of European clubs. The youngster has previously stated that he would like to move to Barcelona, following in the footstep of his fellow countrymen Neymar. He was selected in Dunga’s squad for the recently concluded Copa America, however, his dream was short-lived as he was unable to participate due to visa issues. Jesus is a versatile forward capable of playing anywhere along the front three. He is also an accomplished goal scorer, with 11 goals in 14 appearances in the Brasileiro and four times in five games in the Copa Libertadores, this season.

A Sao Paolo native, Jesus made his first league start in the 2-2 home draw against Atletico Miniero. His first goal came in the Copa do Brasil knockout round away against Agremiação Sportiva Arapiraquense, the only goal scored in a two-legged tie. He is a very technically gifted player, who can be lethal in front of goal. One of the most impressive qualities about Jesus is his composure in front of goal for someone his age. He also possesses a brilliant burst of pace, something that is essential in today’s game.

He is excellent in one on one battles, where he uses his pace and trickery to glide past opponent players. Despite his seemingly slight demeanour, Gabriel is excellent at holding up the ball and bringing others into the game. The fact that Palmeiras tied him down with a contract that runs through December 2019, the maximum contact length allowed for a player of his age, speaks volumes about the club’s faith in his abilities.

Comparisons with Neymar are still premature but if the 19-year-old does stay on the same path of progress that has seen him become one of the most exciting youth prospects in the world, then he can surely surpass the achievements of his compatriot.
