Newcastle 1-2 Wolverhampton: 10-man Wolves leave it late at SJP

Wolverhampton Wanderers left it late against Newcastle United after Matt Doherty’s close-range header handed the newcomers all three points on the day. The Wolves have previously never beaten Newcastle United in their Premier League history but finally broke the curse in Nuno Espirito Santo’s reign.

Diogo Jota opened the scoring for Wolves after some sloppy defending from the Magpies saw the winger in ample space in front of the goal. He took it well on his chest and slotted home from close range, leaving Martin Dubravka helpless.

Rafa Benitez’s side did quickly strike back through Ayoze Perez, who latched onto Salomon Rondon’s cross. The Venezuelan’s free-kick hit the crossbar just moments before the goal but his superb delivery into the box was duly converted by Perez.

But Wolves were still the side who looked a lot more threatening on the counter-attack. Diogo Jota and Helder Costa caused all sorts of problems for the Newcastle backline. DeAndre Yedlin was then sent off in the 57th minute after tugging back Diogo Jota who stole the ball from the American and went through on goal.

The sending off of the American international further sparked up the Wolves side who brought on in-form striker Raul Jimenez and Morgan Gibbs-White. Newcastle asked a few questions but failed to create solid chances in front of the goal.

It was the Wolves who once again came close to finding the back of the net, with substitute Jimenez powering his shot onto the same crossbar that denied Rondon in the first half. But the newcomers kept pushing men forward until Diogo Jota once again broke through on goal with nobody really taking the initiative to spot the attacker whose shot was parried away by Dubravka, only for Matt Doherty to head in the rebound.

Rafa Benitez looked extremely frustrated with the goal and the result but for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, it was a first win against the Tyneside club and two consecutive victories in the space of one week.
