Why Signing Cenk Tosun Is A Good Piece Of Business By Everton

Romelu Lukaku’s £75 million transfer from Everton to Manchester United was a massive story back in summer, but the Toffees too hit the news on several occasions by acquiring a plethora of exciting stars.

Everton, under Ronald Koeman, had an impressive 2016-17 outing and the arrivals of Davy Klaassen, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Nikola Vlasic, Sandro Ramirez along with English legend Wayne Rooney’s return to his boyhood club gained huge attention.

The Toffees were thought to be fighting alongside league’s ‘Big Six’, but things turned out quite opposite and a series of dismal outcomes cost the Dutchman’s managerial job. Koeman was succeeded by veteran Sam Allardyce and the Merseysiders managed to gather some momentum in order to bounce back inside the top-half of the league.

Everton, however, are still lacking a clinical finisher of Lukaku’s calibre upfront as Sandro, the ex-Barcelona forward has failed miserably to impress in his debut Premier League campaign.

Wayne Rooney has netted 10 league goals but has mostly been used in the midfield to utilize his work rate and experience. Oumar Niasse and Dominic Calvert-Lewin had moments of excellence, but the Toffees desperately needed a seasoned striker to lead the line.

The club, thus, made another exciting inclusion this month as soon as the transfer window reopened and their £27m recruit Cenk Tosun is tipped to sort out the striking conundrum that has troubled them since the big Belgian’s egress.

The 26-year-old Turkish international is an interesting piece of business by the club who have been ambitious in recent windows to be among the top sides of the league.

Tosun The Solution To All Attacking Problems?

Tosun is an in-form striker who has regularly netted for Besiktas prior to his move and played a massive role in their two successive Super Lig winning campaigns. The former German youth international started his career with Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt but a lack of opportunities made him travel to Turkey and join Gaziantepspor.

He had a stupendous inception but lost his impact during the next campaign. However, Tosun came back even stronger and his goal-scoring traits during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 campaigns earned him a massive career move for Turkish supergiants Besiktas.

Although he was brought in by Slaven Bilic as a backup to veterans Demba Ba and Mario Gomez in the first couple of seasons, their departure made Tosun the club’s first-choice centre-forward and the player responded with 24 goals that sealed the league for the 2016-17 campaign.

He was in blistering goal-scoring form this term too as he netted four times in the prestigious Champions League group stage fixtures that helped his side to finish as group-toppers above the heavyweights Porto, AS Monaco, and RB Leipzig.

Tosun might not be the quickest on the pitch, but his goal-poaching instinct will allow ‘Big Sam’ to sort out Everton’s goal drought. He is calm, composed as well as altruistic in front of goal, and his aerial ability will add more quality up front for the Merseyside blues.

Although very few players from his country achieved success in Premier League, Tosun has already proven that he is no one-season-wonder by consistently scoring goals in one of the most physical leagues in the football world. He is arguably an intriguing signing by the Toffees and the player is capable of demonstrating himself as a 15 goals-a-season forward – might be a little bit more.
