Newcastle United progressed to the next stage of the FA Cup, after defeating lower league side Luton Town 3-1 at the St. James’ Park on Saturday.
Ayoze Perez handed the home side the lead on the half-hour mark, before doubling his and his side’s tally six minutes later. Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey then added the third goal in the 39th minute to all but confirm the result. Luton pulled one back through Danny Hylton four minutes into the second period and the visitors threatened to pull off a comeback on a number of occasions but the Magpies managed to hold on to their advantage.
Here’s how the Newcastle players fared on the day:
Making his debut for the club, the young goalkeeper looked nervy at times but made some crucial saves to keep Luton out.
Starting on his favoured right-hand side, the Spaniard offered width going forward and was reliable at the back too.
Was taken off injured just after the first goal.
Took over the leader’s role at the back following Lascelles’ substitution and kept things tight and organised under some late pressure from the visitors.
Enjoyed a solid game down the left-hand side. Ninety minutes under his belt after coming back from an injury would have done him a world of good.
Followed up his impressive display against Stoke City with another good performance here. Scored the third goal in the first half to kill the game off.
Helped Newcastle control the midfield battle. There were some signs of rust suggesting he is still not completely fit, but a solid display nevertheless.
Worked hard down the right flank and was a threat at times. But the first goal of the season continues to elude the Scot.
Star of the day. His quickfire double in the first period put Newcastle in the driver’s seat. Could have had a hat-trick, but fired wide in the second half.
The summer signing seems to be growing in confidence with every passing game. Was a threat to the visitors’ backline.
Linked up well with his attacking partners and was a lively presence. Could not find the back of the net though.
Came on to replace the injured Lascelles. Slotted in seamlessly at centre-half and did a decent job.
Replaced Shelvey in the 71st minute. Had a go at goal from distance, but missed.
On for Merino in the 80th minute.
