Tottenham fell way short in the end. Despite everything they did, the North London side fell way short. It just wasn’t meant to be but the fact that they even reached the Champions League final is an impressive achievement on its own.
Mid-way through the season, Tottenham were a mere four points behind second-placed Liverpool and six behind toppers Manchester City. But that was before the January transfer window came rolling. Mousa Dembele departed and it effectively changed Tottenham’s season.
No replacement entered the club and instead, manager Mauricio Pochettino opted to use Moussa Sissoko. The former Newcastle United man has done well as a central midfielder but by no chance is he a Mousa Dembele.
And it showed, with Tottenham often struggling to dominate games as their lead slowly slipped. Things became so bad that on the final day of the season, all Arsenal needed was an Everton win by four goals (they faced Tottenham) and a 4-goal win for themselves.
But fate wasn’t in their hands and instead, Tottenham ended up drawing that fixture, allowing Chelsea to leapfrog them into third place.
Spurs finished fourth, just one point ahead of Arsenal, which made all the difference. Things need to change next season and Tottenham cannot go another transfer window without adding players.
They need reinforcements and it has to be the right men in the right areas. But their first priority should be left-back, with Danny Rose struggling to make an impact over the last few months.
The Englishman has struggled to impose himself and while replacing him will be tough, it’s a job that Lucas Digne can do very well.
The Daily Star has claimed that Tottenham are keen on a move for the £36m-rated Frenchman and that Everton are willing to sell him. But the Toffees want Danny Rose to be a part of the deal, and that makes a lot of sense.
While Digne only arrived last summer from Barcelona for £18m, the 25-year-old has taken to the Premier League beautifully. His combination of offensive and defensive abilities make him arguably the best left-back in the Premier League, which says a lot.
It’s one of the many reasons why Tottenham have to sign him and his age should be a big factor in the negotiations.

Tottenham need Lucas Digne simply because it is the move that will transform the club into a top three side. It will give them a classy star and a long-term option at left-back.
